There is no easy answer to the issue of homelessness. It’s interconnected to unemployment, mental illness, addiction, and the breakdown of the family. The Home, Opportunity, Planning and Equity (HOPE) Advisory Board has begun meeting to improve the homeless situation, and the Criminal Justice System Improvement Project would hopefully reduce crime by and among the homeless. I intend to be actively involved in both, just as I have followed this issue in the past. While I support the HOPE Board’s effort to improve their situation, I believe it’s principally necessary to prevent criminal behavior by and among the homeless, which adversely affects them, as well as citizens and businesses in our community.
